3 Travel Routes to Enjoy Rice-Field Landscapes in Northern Vietnam

Tu Le – Mu Cang Chai (Yen Bai province)

Mu Cang Chai is located at the foot of Hoang Lien Son Mountain at 1,000 meters above sea level. It is famous for gorgeous, impressive and majestic terraced rice fields stretching in a vast valley. Mu Cang Chai terraced fields are located in La Pan Tan, Che Cu Nha and De Xu Phinh communes. In the harvest season, the fields, valleys and hillsides are dyed vividly yellow that makes visitors lost in dreams.

In addition to Mu Cang Chai, Yen Bai province also offers great scenery in Tu Le (Van Chan and Mu Cang Chai district)which are much interested recently by tourists. The best place to enjoy the fields from above is sightseeing point in Khau Pha Pass. When driving across the area, you will be attracted by the scent of sweet rice cultivation- specialties of this land. Tu Le’s harvest season is in mid-September to mid-October, which is very suitable for sightseeing thanks to nice and mild weather; sometimes it’s rainy but not a matter for travelling and sightseeing.

Sapa – Muong Hoa, Ta Van Village, CatCat – Y Ty, Bat Xat (Lao Cai)

Lao Cai is the center of the ‘golden season’ of tourism in the North each September and October with lots of roads and valleys filled with golden and fragrant rice in its harvest season. In Lao Cai, you can admire the scenery in many stops in Sapa, Muong Hoa, Ta Van village, Cat Cat, Y Ty, Bat Xat.

Some fields in Cat Cat, Ta Van is light yellow in the early September, and then then rice ripens very fast in the next 1-2 weeks. On the way from Sapa to Ta Van and Ta Phin village, also the way to Ta Van and Ban Ho ancient rocks, there are lots of beautiful terraced rice fields.

Y Ty is located about 70km from the town of Sapa. The road is quite quite difficult for you to conquer; in return it also offers beautiful scenery on the way, for example: Ban Xeo, Muong Hum, Den Sang, Den Thang and finally Y Ty. In addition to admiring the terraced rice fields in yellow, this place is also a favourite place for cloud hunters.

Hoang Su Phi – Xin Man (Ha Giang)

Ha Giang is also a recommended place in harvest season. However, yellow rice field scenery in Ha Giang comes later than above places, often after 10 Oct. If you miss out chance to conquer the beautiful terraced fields above, you still have an opportunity to experience the stunning landscape in Hoang Su Phi and Xin Man, which is also romantic and brilliant.

The system of terraced rice filed consists of: Ban Luoc and San Sa Ho commune of Dzao and Nung people; Ban Phung commune of La Chi people; Ho Thau, Nam Ty and Thong Nguyen Commune of the Red Dao.
